Looking to help contribute to ITFlow

Hi,

This post is for the developers of ITFlow.

My name is Brent, and I stumbled upon ITFlow the other day. I'm a sophomore in college majoring in CS with a degree emphasis in Cybersecurity. I've been looking for some open-source projects to contribute to, and I have chosen ITFlow as one of them. I am doing this to get real-world experience, meet other developers, learn how to collaborate with developers on GitHub, and help build projects that I genuinely think are interesting.

I am proficient and comfortable with HTML/CSS/Bootstrap/PHP/MySQL.

You will see me opening pull requests for any issues that I find and implementing features in the upcoming future. Any feature that I will implement will come from here. The rate of pull requests will depend entirely on how busy my life is.

bhopkins0 Just a happy user here, but I have to say you chose the right project to contribute to. There is no open source alternative to ITFlow. Commercial alternatives exist and while they might have one feature that shines they are held back by other limitations. Thank you for taking part in ITFlow's development.

Hi guys,

Following on the same example as OP, I would like to lend a hand to this project as it has been a helpful tool in putting in more structure into my company's operations.

My name is Nicholas and I run Fredrik Marine IT Services, a maritime-focused IT infrastructure, equipment and service provider operating in Asia.

Me and my team are not developers. We are network guys that plan/physically deploy/work with infrastructure, servers and client computers onboard ships, yachts and platforms. The assistance we can provide to the project would be on areas like improving the ITFlow documentation, assisting in roadmap/feature planning and contributing financially to the project.

We are all typically deployed on-site somewhere at sea, so our contributions would be during transit time between sites or trips back home.

Do advise if this would be helpful.

I have to be honest, I never even considered the IT staff/infra required to run maritime equipment before! Seems quite different to the conventional "put in a leased line" haha!

It's really great to hear that ITFlow is helpful in operating your company, and it's great you want to give back 🙂

We are certainly open to all and any contributions to the project. This is still only a "side-project" for most of us, so the time we can dedicate to it is fairly limited. Please feel free to share your ideas here on the forum, it's always nice to have different perspectives on bugs/features. If you/your team would like to help with the documentation, I'd be more than happy to set you up an account on DokuWiki.

@wrongecho The newest kid on the block in the maritime sector for the past 3 months is Starlink, which effectively is the leased line we all wanted onboard vessels nearly 20 years ago. Imagine ships with 150+ crew and clients moving from a 1M/1M satellite link (current day) for the entire ship to a 400M/400M link.

As it will be with me and my team, we are contributing to IT Flow documentation as a side effect of our own self-education of the IT Flow system. To that end, I intend to provide use case examples of each function so that a new user can quickly understand the value of each function and how it can be used within their operations.

NicholasChanCJ We're considering moving some of our 4G/5G solutions to Starlink, it's definitely worth exploring from what you've said!

I'll shoot you across an email with some details for the Wiki - no pressure to make changes, but the offer is there 🙂

@wrongecho Not sure of your current use case, but it might be wise to retain the 4G/5G uplinks as either failover or bonding as Starlink will start to saturate pretty quickly; we are already seeing speed drops in excess of 80% consistently in some of our client vessels.

I have received the Wiki login, and will begin to schedule in time to fill up the missing pages.
