Upgrade failed, now I need to restore DB

I tried doing updates today, and started getting HTTP Error 500 pages. I rolled back to a snapshot I had from yesterday, and I did take a backup of the DB before attempting the upgrade, but it seems that me replacing the DB via winscp is not restoring the passwords created today.

What is the recommended way to get my backed up DB live? I also want to troubleshoot the update failing, but the DB restore is my first priority.

This is on a debian VM, with the instance installed with the script.

This is on MySQL, but I've seen posts that say you recommend moving to MariaDB. Is there a way to migrate easily after I restore this?

How are you replacing the DB with WinSCP? Is your backup an export or did you just copy it from the server?

If you just copied the files did you restart the MariaDB service afterwards?

If you have a proper export.
Restore back to your snapshot
Restore your database using either PHPMyAdmin or the mysql command if you're comfortable in CLI
Update to latest version.

I installed the phpmyadmin on the VM and I'm trying to log into it, but it won't accept any credentials I give it.

I'm logged into the phpmyadmin, but for the restore, do I just import over top of what's there?

This will still depend on how you got the original backup.

I would take a backup of what you have now just incase, empty the database then import the correct backup into the database.

That is assuming your backup is an export using something like PHPMyAdmin and not just pulled out from the database (usually /var/lib/mysql/)

I took the backup from the UI while logged into ITFlow.

I've been trying repeatedly in phpadmin to delete all the tables, then import the SQL DB. it keeps getting hung up on specific sections of the .sql file, like this:

#1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MariaDB server version for the right syntax to use near '1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><html> INSERT INTO ticket_replies VALUES("25","Ticket...' at line 1

Passing my file to chatgpt, it seems like phpmyadmin is getting stuck on ticket notes that have quotes and stuff in them.

Yes that appears to be what is happening? How much data do you have? Is it going to be easier for you to remove the special characters and import?

If you're familiar with CLI you can try importing using the utf8mb4 charset which is a little friendlier with special characters.

mysql -u <user> -p --default-character-set=utf8mb4 <db_name> < <filename>.sql

If this is just about restoring a few passwords since you took the snapshot, it might just be easier to only import that part of the database dump into phpmyadmin.
