Late fee applied to full invoice instead of remaining balance

I noticed a small issue with late payment penalties. When a partial payment is made, the late payment is being applied to the entire invoice, instead of just the remaining balance. This results in incorrect charges.

It would be great if the penalty could be calculated only on the outstanding amount.

I can see where this may need to be an option. I know some charge a flat late fee that is a percentage of the original invoice, regardless of what was paid where others do as @jefyojudro said and only charge based on remaining balance.
