Need to translate client UI

Hi,

I've started testing ITFlow, and it seems to be a very good fit for the need we have right now. But my only pushback is that I need to be able to translate the client UI to French because of a law that prevent me to present an interface in another language to the client. I don't need the tech UI to be translated, only the french part.

I am not very knowledgable on web development and all, so I would like to know if someone could point out to me which files should be modified so I can translate the text of the client interface? Is it possible with little knowledge of web development languages, or is it a project already on the roadmap?

Hey @pudubat,

The files you`ll need to tweek and adjust are in the itflow/portal

Some other files in the main-folder like invoices/quotes and so on, which reflect the portal section directly, have to be changed to.

If i remember correctly, i think someone posted a possible solution for translation but i dont know how far they got with that.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for a late reply. I did translate my client portal, and it was working well, until I had to update it. Unfortunately in order to translate, I had to change some placeholders in document.php and ticket.php, and it did prevent the update from working properly. I went ahead and check for a git pull, and it told me that those 2 files needed to be overwritten.

I tried the translation implementation, but unfortunately wasn't able to make it work.

Anyone have an idea on how to be able to update ITFlow without having to copy and paste back my translated files everytime I want to update?

Good to see you back here!

I probably should have mentioned before that manually changing files will break updates. This is because of the way the update uses a git pull to download the latest files from the ITFlow Github repository.

If this is just for the client portal so you can "check the box" that says it must be in French, for now it's probably best to just continue doing what you're doing and manually adjust the text.

Alternatively, you could disable the client portal? Note that any emails sent are still in English, unless you're adjusting these too.

The real long term solution here is for translation to be actually implemented within ITFlow, but it's not high on the list of priorities. It's a feature we definitely want, but there are many others that we (and the community) want more. Even with the PHP function performing translation to all language, adjusting every text string across the entire project is no small feat.

ITFlow is a FOSS project that people contribute their free time to. The way this usually ends up is that people prioritise working on things that are important/interesting to them / their organisations use of the project.

If you do manage to get the translation working via the gettext extension, please feel free to raise a pull request to have the code added to ITFlow:

I know this probably isn't the answer you were hoping for, but I hope this clarifies why something (that appears simple) still hasn't been added yet 🙂

I totally understand that this isn't a top of the list priority, so for the time going I may adjust the text and update when an update is interesting to me. I would totally leave it in english, as it is easier, but unfortunately as a french Canadian, we have some annoying law that prevent us from presenting anything to customers without providing a french version. The fines can be quite annoying.

I'll give the gettext some reading in my free time and hope to be able to get something out of it. In the meantime, I'll just keep a copy of my portal folder and try to keep up with the updates and my translations.

It's best to keep fairly up-to-date with the core ITFlow updates, especially as if you get too far behind updating becomes a major pain (dependency issues), but manually reverting back to your translated version of the client portal pages shouldn't be a huge issue until we get this hammered out.

I think the law referenced is the "Toubon Law". Seems an old law so doesn't specifically mention websites.

With browser translations, they're still not offering the client portal in French. The translation has to be done by the user/their browser so may not meet the legal requirement. Not sure if there's case law here yet.

Hi guys, I think as many here the translation is a big awaiting feature request. I hope there will be something in the near future. I'm willing to help to translate it into german. The issue is as mentioned while we can do manual translation in the files after an upgrade it would be overwritten again. I'm not a programmer but I encountered some translations in other projects where there is a file and the text on the left is the original english text and on the right the translation like "Sign in;Anmelden". Thanks for your efforts!
