Bigbug I think as long as @johnny and @wrongecho like the following idea, I will incorporate it at a later time after 1.0

An option in Integrations settings screen that when toggled, shows the icon(if we can use it) and changes the link.

I wouldn't find a use for this, as I live in the US and WhatsApp is not too common here, but I definitely see this as something most the world will want.

Sorry, I don't support this feature.

WhatsApp is now owned by Meta, I couldn't think of a worse company to endorse.

yeah same we highly recommend against Whatsapp due to the recent acquisition with Meta. Whatspps isn't even opensource so we have no idea what goes on behind the scenes there.

We recommend Signal for secure communication and Signal is opensource.

psiiota I won't call it an integration, it's rather the same idea as the "tel:1234567890" uri

wrongecho Sorry, I don't support this feature.

        I understand you %100

wrongecho WhatsApp is now owned by Meta, I couldn't think of a worse company to endorse.

I agree with you fully, but at the end WhatsApp is a feature rich product even though it's parent company is the worse.

Hi guys, WhatsApp is the primary communication product used in certain countries (ie. Singapore where I am from, as well as Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei which is just next door to us), followed by LINE (ie. Thailand and South Korea) and Telegram.

If an option for enabling and choosing our own instant messager integration (ie. tick box for WhatsApp, LINE next to the mobile number of each contact), that would be very helpful for our day-to-day operations.

NicholasChanCJ I am in Texas, and a few of my clients in Mexico prefer whatsapp and do not even use POTS (Plain Old Telephony Systems). Thats why I am open to the idea. It would definitely be a setting, defaulted to off.

Not going to spend my companies' resources developing something that will not get merged though.

          Bigbug

Tel is defined in RFC 3966. It's pretty universal and would work with most soft phone software/extensions. I can't say the same about WhatsApp or whatever third party apps that then get requested on the back of this.

I see WhatsApp as a big no go in the business world. Regardless of how simple this would be to implement, I will remain against it.

          @wrongecho Well received.

Just sharing the situation in Asia (SouthEast Asia, India) where WhatsApp is the de-facto messenger for both social and particularly work (WhatsApp groups).

@psiiota Thanks for sharing, I do not have operations in USA so its interesting to learn what happens over there and in South America.

I wonder why people are choosing WhatsApp over the Opensource Signal App. My best guess is marketing. I'm curious if anyone knows here.

johnny it's intriguing to observe that while phones are the standard mode of communication here, many regions globally rely heavily on apps like WhatsApp, especially places with limited traditional telecom infrastructure.

I believe it's crucial to acknowledge and respect the diverse communication norms across different cultures. It might be perceived as inconsiderate to expect everyone worldwide to adapt to a system that's predominantly used in America and Europe, thereby overlooking the prevalent methods in various other regions. Embracing a more global perspective could encourage a more inclusive approach, don't you think?

I see that both WhatsApp and Signal and probably any other Messenger works the same when it comes to "click-to-message"

            Signal: https://signal.me/#p/+18001112222
            WhatsApp: https://wa.me/+18001112222
(if you have WA or Signal installed on your phone/PC try to click the links above and it'll open up the corresponding app to the phone number specified after the "/" )

So, how about giving it totally into the hand of the user.
by being able to put in your own pre-URI like "https://signal.me/#p/" or "https://wa.me/" and then it'll take the phone number from the clients phone number field and put it right after the "/"

like this everyone could choose whatever they like.

            Thoughts?

@johnny Just speaking in the capacity of a company operating within Asia.

WhatsApp has been the instant messenger that achieved traction in most SouthEast Asia markets in the early 2000s after other messengers like LINE and Viber failed.

LINE then focused on certain markets like South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan with great results due to their early and mass usage of Emojis and they are the de-facto messengers in those countries to this date. Interestingly these countries also like to use Facebook Messenger as their instant messenger.

Viber was the only messenger that could reliably send messages and calls through the Myanmar restricted internet, and the large number of Burmese people working overseas use it to call family.

The black horse messenger app that has no region limit is WeChat, the most intrusive spying messenger that anyone who does business with China, have no choice but to use it. Some China suppliers have been adopting WhatsApp more and more these 5 years due to meeting their client needs.

Telegram is another black horse which gained rapid traction in the past 5 years within Asia as it was used by the younger generation for the public channels and deletable chats.

Signal is just not installed on a large enough consumer base in these regions and thus no one bothers about it.
