Can we revisit this topic?
The one feature I consistently miss is an "Asset Inventory ID," also known as an "Asset tag."
Assets are typically named after their hostname when available. Otherwise, they receive descriptive names like "Card Reader Backoffice."
However, all assets should be tagged with an inventory ID. These IDs are essential for support documentation, accounting records, and electrical inspection reports. Many customers prefer a format such as 25-OFF1-nnnnn (Year, location code, five-digit counter).
I typically create device labels using extremely durable metallic labels printed with resin thermal transfer technology. Each label includes the company logo, a QR code linked to the device tag, a standard barcode, and a clearly legible device tag in Courier 24pt font. This greatly simplifies service documentation and inspections.
When a user requests assistance, I simply ask for the large number on the sticker. :-)
While automatic numbering and label printing functions are common in inventory management applications, they aren't strictly necessary. However, having an "Asset ID" field would be very beneficial.
